DUNCANSVILLE, Pa. -- The high cost of gas and food is starting to take its toll on the Alleghenies. On Tuesday, a popular grocery store announced it can no longer afford to keep its doors open. The Riverside grocery store in Duncansville will close its doors for the final time next week, and when it does, more than 20 people will lose their jobs. The store has been open for almost 40 years, but the manager said they had to call it quits because people are cutting back. He said instead of buying steaks, they're buying hamburgers and instead of buying Oreos, they are buying the store brands. According to the manager, they simply can't turn a profit. And the store hasn't been able to offer the bargains that the competition does. The manager said the worst part is, the employees and customers are all like family. Some people who live nearby often walk to the store, but now they're all looking for somewhere else to go."The store is very convenient and it was quite a shock when we heard it was going to close.... We're going to miss it," said Christine Douds of Duncansville.Other shoppers were also disappointed by the news on Tuesday. The store will tentatively close for good next Wednesday, Aug. 27. Until then, customers will get a 20 percent discount on all of the inventory.
