JONES TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- The Army Corps of Engineers is taking a close look at the East Branch Dam in Elk County. The reservoir was built in 1948 and controls flooding of the Clarion River.A few years after the reservoir was finished, some seepage problems were noticed at the dam. There haven't been any other problems in the past 50 years, but the Corps of Engineers wants to thoroughly inspect the dam to make sure it is safe.As part of the new plan, the levels at the lake will be lowered, the reservoir will be staffed 24/7 and the corps will conduct emergency drills.Corps of Engineers officials said there are several rumors circulating through the community that aren't true."One of the rumors is that there is a large crack in the dam," said Gary Froelich. "That is simply not true."The Corps of Engineers will address these rumors at a public meeting, Monday evening, in Ridgway.
