Penn State hockey announced its out of conference and Big Ten slate on Wednesday morning as the Nittany Lions look to make it three NCAA Tournament appearances in four years.
That journey will begin October 12th as Penn State takes on Sacred Heart in a two-game series. The Nittany Lions will host the University of Alaska Fairbanks the very next week as part of a Thursday/Friday series in the lead up to Penn State football's home clash with Michigan.
A single meeting with Robert Morris in Pittsburgh will be the final out of conference game before the Big Ten opener against Wisconsin on November 1 in State College. The remainder of Penn State's out of conference slate will be sprinkled within the Big Ten schedule with a games Merrimack and UMass Lowell on back-to-back nights in late November between series against Ohio State and Michigan.
The Nittany Lions will play the end of November and the entirety of December on the road with those meetings against Merrimack and UMass Lowell on the road followed by series against Michigan an Notre Dame on the road.
Penn State will play a two game stretch against Niagara and the second game of the series against Robert Morris to open the new year before the final six Big Ten series of the season. The Nittany Lions will close out the regular season against Minnesota in State College with those final six series split evenly between home and away meetings. In total Penn State will play eight of its final 21 games on the road.
Penn State's out of conference slate features teams that won 78 games last year, the lowest in an increasingly decreasing total since 92 wins between all team on the 2016-17 slate (79 wins in 2018-19, 88 in 2017-18). That 2016-17 season including Notre Dame, a not yet Big Ten team, the Irish winning 19 games the season prior.
The entire season will begin with an exhibition meeting against Ottawa on October 6.
