Penn State and Pitt might not be done just yet with the modern version of the historic rivalry.
“We have two games left in football. We play them next year on Sept. 9 at Heinz Field and it’ll be the 99th meeting between Pitt and Penn State," Pitt athletic director Heather Lyke told the Canton Repository earlier this week.
"Then we play the Century Game back in Penn State in 2019. We have a contract very close to being done and being sent to Penn State to extend the football deal and I think that’s a huge priority and a huge rivalry and it’s necessary, so we’re working hard on that.”
Assuming that the series is extended, it remains to be seen what years and for how long that would happen. Penn State has two opening for the 2020 season and a single opening for the 2021 campaign. Penn State has multiple schedule openings beyond that every season. A 2025 trip to Virginia Tech is the most distant game currently scheduled for the Nittany Lions.
Penn State leads the all-time series 51-43.
