The commute between Altoona and State College will soon get much shorter for many local drivers.

After years of delays, PennDOT announced on Thursday that Interstate 99 will be completed by Thanksgiving. The opening of the Interstate will happen in phases. PennDOT spokeswoman Marla Fannin says the northbound lanes will open by the end of October and the southbound lanes will open by Thanksgiving.

The construction of Interstate 99 was delayed for nearly four years, while PennDOT spent $80-million dollars to cleanup large amounts of pyretic rock that was unearthed during the project.

Once opened, motorists will be able to travel from the Pennsylvania Turnpike to Interstate 80 on the same roadway. And for local drivers traveling to State College, the trip is an estimated 35 minutes from the 17th Street Interchange to the Atherton Street exit.
