The number of collectors for earned income tax payments would be reduced from 560 to 69, generally following county lines, under a bill signed by Govwebir Ed Rendell on Wednesday.

The measure is designed to create standard reporting rules and result in a more efficient system. State officials estimate local taxing bodies will recoup more than $230-million in uncollected revenues as a result. Rendell called the bill a huge success for both companies and municipalities.

The legislation was proposed after the Department of Community and Economic Development issued a report in 2004 that said the tax collection system was fragmented and inefficient.

Easing income tax?
» How is this easing income tax collections? There will be 69 tax collectors based mostly on county lines working by themselves I assume with no additional staffing? How do you replace the workload of 560 people with 69? Is this going to bring about another tax based on the county?
