Axes and watermelon seeds will fly, logs will be rolled and cross-cut, and deer scat will plop into jars at the Lumber Day competition of the twenty-second annual Black Moshannon Summer Festival, Saturday, July 19.  This is a strictly amateur competition for prizes in individual events and the titles of Lumber Jack and Lumber Jill of the Year in the adult, teen, and youth categories.  After the Lumber Day competition, agile-footed log-birlers will test their ability to stay upright on a log in the water – with someone else at the other end of the log, trying to do the same thing.
The festival runs July 19 and 20 at Black Moshannon State Park.  In addition to Lumber Day activities celebrating the logging heritage of central Pennsylvania, the festival will feature a craft show on both days; interpretive displays and programs on life in the 1700s, wildlife rehabilitation, and bees; a sand castle contest; a Saturday mountain bike ride; a Saturday evening beach party with music and free refreshments; Sunday canoe races; children’s land and water games on Sunday; and fly casting, canoeing, and trap shooting instruction, also on Sunday.

Saturday’s live music performances include wandering minstrel Joe Serafini from 2:00-4:00 throughout the festival grounds; Then Again, at the picnic grove stage from 4:00-6:00; and DJ Terry Williams at the beach party, 8:30-10 p.m.  On Sunday Richard Sleigh will perform from 1:00-2:00.
