Penn State Hockey: Nittany Lions Fall 4-0 To Michigan In Ann Arbor

on January 19, 2018 10:19 PM

Penn State hockey couldn't make the most of a fast start and Michigan needed only a few chances to take care of a 4-0 victory on Friday night in the first game of the series in Ann Arbor.

The Nittany Lions came out of the gates storming, the healthiest the team has been in months with the long awaited return of defenseman Kevin Kerr, but Penn State couldn't quite find the back of the net in the early going.

Neither could Michigan, both goalies standing tall until Peyton Jones was finally beaten midway through the first period to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

It was more of the same in the second, neither team changing the momentum of the game but both teams creating chances and by the end of the period the score remained 1-0, a rarity for two of the nation's highest scoring offenses.

The third period looked to be just as much of a deadlock until Jones couldn't quite reach a puck as it dribbled past his outstretched left leg and into the goal. With 10 minutes to play in the game a two-goal deficit did not seem insurmountable for the Nittany Lions, but then another Michigan goal just minutes later all but sealed the deal.

An empty net tally would give the game its final score.

Both teams will take the ice on Saturday night for the final game of the regular season series between the two teams. A Penn State win would tie the series 2-2 for the regular season with a split earlier in the year at Pegula Ice Arena.
