Penn State Hockey: Nittany Lions Earn Split With 3-2 Victory Over Michigan State

on February 17, 2018 7:30 PM

Penn State hockey picked up a crucial win to keep its postseason chances alive for one more weekend as the Nittany Lions hung on behind 31 saves from Peyton Jones to beat Michigan State 3-2 on Saturday night.

It was Chase Berger scoring first around the midway point of the opening period to give Penn State a 1-0 lead, but like so many times before the advantage was short lived, a Michigan State breakaway tying the game nearly a minute later.

Andrew Sturtz picked up his 101st point at Penn State with just eight seconds left to go in the period to give the Nittany Lions a 2-1 lead heading into the break. Just five minutes into the second period Alex Limoges would make it a 3-1, a seemingly comfortable lead for much of the game.

But Michigan State would not relent, and a 17-shot third period was rewarded with a goal near the midway point of the final 20 minutes of play. The Spartans would continue to press, but Jones stood tall and the Nittany Lions hung on to pick up the victory and split the series on the road. Jones made 31 saves on the night.

For Penn State it was a key victory in keeping reasonable postseason hopes alive. The Nittany Lions will likely need a sweep next weekend against Minnesota at Pegula Ice Arena to truly rejuvenate those chances.

Nevertheless the victory snaps a skid of eight straight winless games for Penn State and as history has shown, the Nittany Lions are plenty capable of getting hot.
