Penn State Football: Nittany Lion Fans Rank Third In 2017 Attendance

on February 13, 2018 3:30 PM

The latest NCAA attendance figures are out and Penn State football finished ranked third nationally with an average home attendance figure of 106,707.

How does that stack up against the rest of the Big Ten? Michigan and Ohio State both came in just ahead of the Nittany Lion faithful with an average attendance of 111,589 in Ann Arbor and 107,495 in Columbus. All told though Penn State was second in total fans for home games this season with 746,946.

Penn State fans set a new Beaver Stadium record against Michigan with 110,823 squeezing into their seats to see the Nittany Lions take apart the Wolverines 42-13.

In terms of the bigger picture, Penn State finished fifth in the nation when it comes to crowd increase with 6,450 more fans showing up per game than in 2016. The top four beyond Penn State were Purdue, Akron, Florida Atlantic and New Mexico State.

Since 2014 Penn State has had three seasons make it above the 100,000 mark for fans per game, but the 2017 season might mark the start of Penn State's return to the truly "mega" attendance numbers.

Since then, the numbers have been:

2014: 101,623 (seven games)

2015: 99,799 (seven games)

2016: 100,257 (seven games)

2017: 106,707 (seven games)
