Penn State Football: Moorhead Reportedly Set To Take Mississippi State Head Coaching Job

on November 28, 2017 9:50 PM

Joe Moorhead will take the Mississippi State head coaching job, Brett McMurphy reported Tuesday night. The program is looking to replace former head coach Dan Mullen, who took the same job at Florida earlier in the week.

Moorhead was hired and announced as Penn State's offensive coordinator on Dec. 12, 2015 and has since led a resurgence of a Nittany Lion offense that has been among one of the nation's best the past 15 months.

Losing Moorhead will be a difficult blow to recover from for Penn State, with the Nittany Lions seemingly only weeks from officially announcing the departure of Saquon Barkley to the NFL Draft.

As of note, backup quarterback Tommy Stevens is slated to graduate this spring, and could transfer and play immediately as a grad student. Current starting quarterback Trace McSorley is also draft eligible, and while it is expected he will return for his senior season, he has yet to confirm that fact.

All of these permutations come on the backdrop of Penn State set to complete back-to-back 10-win seasons. It is unknown at this time if Moorhead will coach in Penn State's to-be-announced bowl game. If he did not, Penn State will have played two of its four bowl games without a major coordinator that got them there. In 2015 Penn State faced Georgia in the TaxSlayer Bowl without recent fired offensive coordinator John Donovan.
