Penn State Football: Moorhead Reportedly Candidate For Mississippi State Job

on November 27, 2017 10:20 PM

Joe Moorhead is a candidate for the Mississippi State head coaching job USA Today is reporting. The program is looking to replace former head coach Dan Mullen who took the same job at Florida earlier in the week.

Moorhead was hired and announced as Penn State's offensive coordinator on December 12 of 2015 and has since led an resurgence of a Nittany Lion offense that has been among one of the nation's best the past 24 months.

While Penn State is not required to report or announce raises or extensions for assistant coaches, athletic director Sandy Barbour hinted that Moorhead had received one or both following the Nittany Lions Big Ten Championship season and Rose Bowl appearance.

The former Fordham head coach has acknowledged his interest in returning to the head coaching ranks, but has frequently reiterated that the move would have to make sense, and that he is not seeking out the first job that presents itself. Equally true, Mississippi State is not the first program to inquire about his services. Moorhead interviewed with Purdue last offseason and his name was briefly floated in connection to the Temple opening.

Losing Moorhead would be a difficult blow to recover from for Penn State, the Nittany Lions seemingly only weeks from officially announcing the departure of Saquon Barkley to the NFL Draft.

Backup quarterback Tommy Stevens is slated to graduate this spring as well, and could transfer and play immediately as a grad student. Current starting quarterback Trace McSorley is also draft eligible, and while it is expected he will return for his senior season, he has yet to confirm that fact.

All of these permutations coming on the backdrop of Penn State set to complete back-to-back 10-win seasons, almost certainly facing at least a partial rebuilding year in 2018.

It is unknown how quickly a decision will be made for either party or how it might impact Penn State's coaching assignments for its to-be-announced bowl game. Penn State has not responded to a request for comment.
