on October 08, 2017 2:29 PM

After staying put at No. 4 for three weeks, Penn State rose in the rankings following its win at Northwestern on Saturday.

The Nittany Lions secured the No. 3 spot in this week’s Associated Press and Coaches polls — surpassing Oklahoma after the Sooners’ loss at home to unranked Iowa State.

Alabama once again held on to the top spot this week and Clemson stayed ahead of the Nittany Lions at No. 2 as each team beat an unranked opponent. Right behind Penn State in the AP Poll are Georgia at No. 4 and Washington at No. 5. In the Coaches Poll the Huskies are fourth and the Bulldogs are fifth.

The ranking is Penn State’s highest since November of 2008, when Joe Paterno’s squad was No. 3 heading into a matchup with Iowa.

The Nittany Lions have a bye this week before hosting Michigan on Oct. 21. The Wolverines dropped to No. 16 in the Coaches Poll and No. 17 in the AP Poll after losing at home to Michigan State, 14-10, on Saturday night.

Michigan State is ranked for the first time this season at No. 21 in the AP Poll and No. 22 in the Coaches Poll. The Nittany Lions visit East Lansing on Nov. 4.

Ohio State climbed one spot in both polls, moving to No. 8 in the Coaches and No. 9 in the AP. Penn State travels to Columbus on Oct. 28.

Wisconsin rounds out the Big Ten's presence in the rankings, coming in at No. 6 in the Coaches Poll and No. 7 in the AP Poll.
