Penn State Basketball: Talor Battle Hired As Assistant Coach

on September 10, 2020 2:13 PM

Penn State men's basketball has hired former Nittany Lion standout Talor Battle as an assistant coach, the program announced the move on Thursday afternoon.

Battle replaces Kevin Freeman who recently left the program to return to UConn for a role at his alma mater.

"Talor embodies everything it means to be a Nittany Lion and his work ethic, winning mentality and attitude align with our vision for success," Penn State coach Patrick Chambers said in a press release. "His experiences at Penn State as a leader, as a competitor in the Big Ten and as part of this community will be invaluable for our current and future student-athletes."

For longtime Penn State basketball fans, Battle is a player that needs little in the way of an introduction. Among the greatest players to have laced it up for the Nittany Lions, Battle slashed to the rim and hit shots from unimaginable ranges during his career in State College.

The 2011 AP honorable-mention All-American is Penn State's all-time leading scorer with 2,213 career points during his four-year career and helped lead the Nittany Lions to the 2009 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) championship.

He earned All-Big Ten Tournament Team honors in 2011 as Penn State advanced to its first Big Ten Tournament Championship game and first NCAA Tournament appearance in a decade.

Battle finished his career in the top five of Penn State's career lists for assists (4th, 517), 3-point field goals (3rd, 317), field goals (2nd, 722) and free throws (4th, 452) as well as setting the career record for starts (131) and Big Ten record for career minutes played (4,799). He still holds several positions on single-season top-10 stat lists.

Having recently retired from a nearly decade-long overseas career, Battle has spent time around the Nittany Lion program the past few seasons, forging a close relationship with Chambers in the process. The move not only brings immediate credibility to Chambers' staff, but also allows for a quick integration of a new member during unprecedented and uncertain times.
