Longtime administrator donates major gift
Thursday, June 5, 2008

Penn State Altoona received a major gift from William Dennis "Denny" Stewart, the campus' senior director of business operations, and his wife, Dianne. The commitment is the single largest by an employee in the history of Penn State Altoona. The donors placed no restrictions on the purposes for which the gift might be used. The Stewarts' philanthropy was recognized by the University with the naming of an athletic field on campus and a dedication ceremony that was held June 1 in Port-Sky Cafe.

"Denny and Dianne have been respected members of the Penn State Altoona family for nearly four decades," said Chancellor Lori J. Bechtel-Wherry. "They have been vocal advocates for the college in the local community and loyal friends to countless faculty, staff and students. This historic act of philanthropy is a powerful statement about their commitment to the advancement of Penn State Altoona. On behalf of the entire campus community, I extend our collective appreciation to Denny and Dianne for their many contributions to our success and a generous gift that reflects their passion for our college."

The Stewarts said the gift is a symbol of their appreciation for the many ways their lives have been enriched through their association with Penn State Altoona and the University.

Denny Stewart has enjoyed a distinguished 38-year administrative career at Penn State Altoona. After 13 years as a member of the Student Affairs staff, he accepted the position of director of business operations in 1983. Promoted to senior director in 2004, he directs a staff of 115 and administers a $5 million budget.

Dianne Stewart is a graduate of Lock Haven University where she majored in health and physical education. Her teaching career included one year at Shikellamy High School in Sunbury and 34 years at Juniata Valley High School, where she also coached cheerleading and girls' basketball and track, before retiring in 2004.
