The Blair County Commissioners have officially rejected a 2008 funding request for the City of Altoona’s Gateway Improvement Project.
The decision came at a Tuesday morning board meeting; just two weeks after Mayor Wayne Hippo made a personal plea for the funds. The City of Altoona was given $37,000 from the housing program last year. This year – they received nothing. The money is awarded through the county’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund
Commissioner Diane Meling says although the project is effective and worthwhile, out of fairness she chose to support the recommendations made by the housing fund’s advisory board.
Mayor Hippo says this year’s gateway project could be severely impacted without the funding. Hundreds of volunteers rehabilitated 19 homes during the first round of the project last summer.
Commissioner Donna Gority has suggested that the city go to some businesses and other local organizations in an effort to drum-up some financial support.
